We organise various projects that cover important subjects like science, math, and proficiency in English and Bahasa Malaysia (written, spoken, reading and understanding). These projects happen all year round and are designed to open the minds of the children and develop a love for learning and passion for being the best that they can be.
Projects
Project Read
The lack of reading habit among Malaysians has been a nightmare in our country. Much emphasis has
been placed on improving literacy and reading habits especially among young students.
Aims and Objectives
This project aims to cultivate a reading and library-going habit among Tamil school students. The objectives
of the project are:
•
To ensure that students between the ages of 10 and 11, in 10 Tamil schools read at least two books (of any
language) a week, for a specified period. Furthermore, they would be asked to write a very brief,
guided summary of each book they read.
•
To help the students become accustomed to using public libraries. One way is to bring all participating
students to a nearby public library once a month during the course of the programme.
•
To ensure parents play their role in contributing to these objectives. One method is to have discussions
with the parents of the participating students. Discussions will take place twice (once in the middle and
the other at the end of programme). In the second session, students will be given certificates of
achievement.
Methodology
First, a collection of 50 suitable books (in all three languages) must be identified. It should be based on their reading ability and reading needs. The aid of a panel of
expert teachers would be sought to identify the collection.
•
To bring all the participating students to the National Science Centre (NSC) at least once, and explain to them some 10 exhibits or displays found there.
•
To disseminate the findings to all Tamil schools and emphasise the importance of ‘hands-on’ experience.
•
To encourage these schools to take part in Science Fairs at the National level.
Evaluation
Evaluation is an on-going process. The log which the students maintained will be used to gauge the effectiveness of
the programme. If the record of the books becomes increasingly advanced, the objectives of the project
would be considered met.
Furthermore, the following indicators will be used to gauge the effectiveness of the project:
•
The number of students who continue to participate until the end of the project.
•
The number of students who continue to visit libraries regularly during the project.
•
The average number of books read per month, read by the participant within the period of the project, and
whether it increases gradually every month.
